Overview
The Linguistics programme at the University of Oregon provides an immersive academic experience focused on the intersection of culture, computation, and human communication. Students engage with the scientific study of language to understand how it is acquired, used, and transformed across different global societies and cognitive frameworks.
This course of study encourages students to explore the massive and inclusive art of language through a variety of interdisciplinary lenses. By combining theoretical coursework with practical research, the department ensures that learners develop a robust understanding of both the social and technical aspects of the field.
The curriculum is designed to be flexible, allowing for the integration of studies in psychology, computer science, and various world languages.
Why Linguistics at the University of Oregon?
The University of Oregon is home to a distinguished Department of Linguistics that prides itself on creating meaningful connections between faculty and students. The institution recently hosted the prestigious Linguistic Society of America’s Summer Institute, drawing scholars from across the globe to its campus.
Students benefit from state-of-the-art facilities, including dedicated campus language labs where local research is conducted. The department is also a leader in language revitalization efforts, particularly working with indigenous communities in the Pacific Northwest to preserve endangered Native American languages.
Research opportunities are a cornerstone of the experience, with faculty-led projects spanning from the Amazon to the Serengeti. Undergraduates and graduates alike can participate in experiential learning, assisting in documentation and gaining hands-on skills in child and adult language acquisition.
Academic support is robust, featuring a dedicated Linguistics Study Hall where undergraduate students receive tutoring and mentorship from graduate peers. This collaborative environment fosters a strong sense of community and ensures that every student has the resources needed to succeed in their academic journey.
