Because nearly every part of our lives is shaped by our relationships with each other, sociology examines many different types of questions such as: How do diseases spread across social networks? How do new organizations succeed? How do businesses analyze market demand? Why do racial, ethnic, and gender inequalities persist despite so many attempts to redress them? What are the societal roots of criminal behavior?

Careers

Sociology majors at Duke University are equipped with an extremely diverse skill set, including research proficiencies, analytical expertise, problem- solving and critical thinking abilities, that can be applied to tackle many of the most important questions facing society today.

Alumni of the department have led major corporations, founded non-profit organizations, and worked in leading positions within government. Sociology graduates also attend top medical schools, law schools, and business schools where their expansive training in the study of human relationships makes them stand out above others.

Employment of sociologists is projected to grow 5% from 2022 to 2032, faster than the average for all occupations.

Sociologists continue to be in demand to apply sociological research to address pressing societal issues. For example, sociologists often collaborate with researchers in other social sciences, such as economists, psychologists, and survey researchers to study how social structures or groups influence policy decisions about health, education, politics, criminal justice, business, or economics.

Transcripts

Duke will consider official scores as well as scores that are self-reported on the application. Submitting essay scores from the ACT and/or SAT is optional.

If you are a non-native English speaker or if you are not currently studying in an English-medium curriculum, Duke recommends but do not require that you take an English proficiency test.

Duke requires three letters of recommendation for each applicant: one from your school counselor and two from teachers who have taught you in major academic courses (English, mathematics, social studies, sciences, foreign languages), preferably within the last two years of secondary school.

Both the Common Application and the Coalition Application include a one-page personal essay as well as short essay questions specific to Duke.
