In addition to offering students the opportunity to major in Art History or Visual Art, for those interested in studying both the history and practice of Art, a joint major is offered.

Following the established course requirements in each major, students enroll in a broad range of Art History and studio courses culminating in advanced independent work and capstone experiences.

We live in an increasingly visual culture, awash with images in an expanding range of media – from painting and sculpture to photography, television, film, video and the internet – and public and private settings – from the gallery and city street to the courtroom, the hospital, and the lecture hall. Join the Art History and Visual Arts program at Duke University.

Learning Outcomes

Students will demonstrate an effective knowledge of visual vocabulary appropriate for careers in the visual arts, architecture, visual studies, and the media.

They will recognize and understand major monuments, artists, methods and theories,and be able to assess the qualities of works of art and architecture in their historical and cultural settings.

Students will be able to locate, interpret and analyze primary and secondary sources relevant to research questions.

They will use innovative theoretical and methodological approaches to generate new approaches to the history of representation understood within broader socio-cultural perspectives. They will demonstrate skills necessary for effective preparation of artwork for public presentation, using a variety of materials and techniques.

Students will construct a portfolio of works that demonstrates their writing, and presentation skills through verbal, written, and constructive exercises.

Duke University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate, masters, doctorate, and professional degrees.

Transcripts

Duke will consider official scores as well as scores that are self-reported on the application. Submitting essay scores from the ACT and/or SAT is optional.

If you are a non-native English speaker or if you are not currently studying in an English-medium curriculum, Duke recommends but do not require that you take an English proficiency test.

Duke requires three letters of recommendation for each applicant: one from your school counselor and two from teachers who have taught you in major academic courses (English, mathematics, social studies, sciences, foreign languages), preferably within the last two years of secondary school.

Both the Common Application and the Coalition Application include a one-page personal essay as well as short essay questions specific to Duke.
