Overview
Whether you want to create the next hot application or analyze medical data for cancer research, studying computing will give you a competitive edge, the ability to solve complex problems, and a career that will never be obsolete. Given the incredibly high demand from companies for today’s computer science students, considering a major in Computer Science is a sound investment.
UTSA’s Computer Science Program
Let’s face it, computer technology touches just about every part of our lives today—from the cars we drive, to the shows we watch, to the ways businesses and governments deal with us. Understanding how to identify and solve real-world problems using technology is at the core of Computer Science and is highly sought after in today’s job market.
At the Computer Science program of The University of Texas at San Antonio you have optional concentrations in Cloud and Systems, Cyber Security, Data Science, Software Engineering, or the highly specialized Cyber Operations track. Concentrations and tracks are declared after you’ve been admitted and have met with your academic advisor. Students who successfully complete a concentration/track will have the designation recorded on their transcript in addition to receiving their regular Bachelor of Science in Computer Science diploma.
Don’t have any programming or coding experience? That’s OK! Our undergraduate program is designed so no prior programming experience is necessary, as students will learn basic programming and how to write/understand code throughout their coursework. In this program, you’ll obtain a deep understanding of computers, the inner workings of software and the application of computer technology to real-world problems. After earning your degree you’ll be able to pursue careers in industry, government or even graduate studies.
The National Security Agency (NSA) designated UTSA’s Computer Science department as a Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Operations Education in 2018. UTSA is one of only 20 institutions to receive this designation, which recognizes the ability to thoroughly prepare workforce-ready professionals to protect the nation’s information infrastructure.
The UTSA Computer Science department also offers a Certificate in Pathogenic Outbreak Investigations for students in biology, information systems, computer science and computer engineering disciplines to investigate biological and digital pathogen identification, propagation prediction and mitigation.
