Overview
The Jewelry and Metalsmithing programme at The University of Akron offers students a rigorous creative environment to master the complexities of metalwork. This degree integrates historical craft perspectives with modern art theory to help students develop a unique personal voice through the manipulation of ferrous and nonferrous metals.
Participants in this course refine their technical skills by creating a diverse range of items, including utilitarian objects, jewelry, and large-scale metal sculptures. The curriculum is designed to challenge students to think critically about contemporary issues while gaining proficiency in both functional and nonfunctional artistic forms.
Why Jewelry and Metalsmithing at The University of Akron?
Students benefit from the extensive facilities at the Mary Schiller Myers School of Art, located within the 70,000 square foot Folk Hall. This dedicated learning space ensures that creative research is supported by cutting-edge professional tools and well-equipped studios specifically designed for metalsmithing.
The studio environment features advanced equipment such as a full anodizing system, individual soldering stations, and an electroformer. Students also have access to centrifuge and vacuum systems for casting, enameling kilns, sandblasters, and a wide assortment of raising and forming stakes and hammers.
The university enhances the educational experience through the Emily Davis Art Gallery, which showcases regional and international works. Additionally, a visiting artists and lecture series provides students with direct exposure to practicing professionals, designers, and scholars who offer personal attention and expert advising.
Hands-on learning is further supported by opportunities for co-op programs and internships. Students have previously gained real-world experience at prestigious organisations, including advertising agencies and design studios, ensuring they are prepared for the competitive global art market upon graduation.
