Overview

The German program of Northwestern University encourages students in the department of German to pursue either a Major in German or one of the three minors: A Minor in German, a Minor in German Studies, and a Minor in Business German.

In both, the major and the three minors, students will accomplish two broad goals:

  • become acquainted with the language and culture beyond second-year college German
  • create (with the help of the undergraduate advisor) an individual concentration that organizes and completes their study of German culture, literature, and history.

The learning goals for the Major are as follows:

  • linguistic competence to the point of “near native fluency",
  • knowledge of the basic canon of modern German literature, and
  • knowledge of modern German/central European history and culture, and
  • expertise in a concentration that combines the previous elements with a theme developed in consultation with the student's adviser.
