Overview

This certificate in Medieval and Renaissance Studies is offered at California State University Long Beach and offer students interested in these periods the opportunity to pursue a course of study leading to a Minor or a Certificate in Medieval and Renaissance Studies. Courses that are used to meet the certificate requirements may be counted, where applicable, toward the General Education requirements, the major, and minor requirements.

Student Internships

The Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies supports two (unpaid) Student Internship programmes.

Academic Year Internships: This programme supports two student interns in the development of scholarly projects that support the CSULB medieval and renaissance studies academic community. Under the guidance of Center Directors, students develop a project of particular interest to their studies to pursue throughout the academic year.

Summer Internships: This programme supports advanced students of medieval studies who are interested in working in the medieval fantasy writing and table-top gaming industry. Under the direction of Dr. Ilan Mitchell-Smith and in collaboration with leading independent fantasy publishers, students gain experience in editorial and creative writing and well as editorial proof reading.

General requirements

A bachelor's degree with an approved major. Certificate may be completed prior to the completion of the B.A. requirement or while in the process of working toward an advanced degree.

Consultation and approval of the programme with a faculty advisor.

Intermediate level language proficiency on the college level, including a course in medieval or Renaissance literature of the language. It is expected that the language will be Anglo-Saxon, French, German, Greek, Italian, Latin, or Spanish, but with consent of the advisor another language may be substituted.
