Overview

There are two graduation pathways in the Liberal Studies major at California State University Long Beach:

The Bachelor of Arts Programme is for students who seek subject matter preparation for elementary teaching as preparation for a post-baccalaureate credential programme to be completed separately from the bachelor’s degree.

The Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) is for students intending to become teachers who wish to combine subject matter preparation for elementary teaching with coursework leading to an integrated Multiple or Urban Dual Teaching Credential.

The Liberal Studies programme is designed for those students who wish to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree to prepare them in the academic subject areas relevant to elementary and special education teaching.

The Liberal Studies Major is an approved pre-professional programme of subject matter preparation consistent with the standards established by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

Key Facts

Demonstrate proficiency in Elementary Subject Matter areas (Language Arts, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, History & Social Science, Visual & Performing Arts).

Demonstrate an understanding of the intersectionality of race, class, ethnicity, language, gender identity, ability, and sexual orientation as they relate to teaching and learning.

Demonstrate proficiency in written, oral (as appropriate) and digital communication (including the appropriate use of technology).

Demonstrate proficiency in critical thinking, informational literacy, and argumentation.

All first-year student applicants must submit the following items:
- File a CSULB application through Cal State Apply by the deadline
- Have earned a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA or "B'" grade according to the CSULB GPA scale.
- Fulfill CSULB's English Language Requirement
- Have completed at least 1 year of high school mathematics. Applicants to STEM majors must have at least 3 years of high school mathematics.
- Provide scores for at least 5 subjects completed. In addition, please provide scores for at least 2 "A/AS" subjects completed.
