Overview

The Comparative World Literature programme at California State University Long Beach has three emphasis options:

The World Literature in Translation emphasis offers a broad background in world literature in translation. It is appropriate for the student interested in focusing on global literature and culture.

Cultural Studies is the interdisciplinary and multicultural study of literary and other forms of cultural expression analysed within their social and historical contexts. This emphasis is designed for students wishing to concentrate in cultural studies firmly grounded in literary study. It provides for an interdisciplinary pattern of courses in cultural studies drawn from various disciplines.

Language and Literature is designed to prepare the student for graduate study in Comparative Literature or related fields, with an upper division concentration in foreign language.

Learning Outcomes

Students will demonstrate knowledge of relevant literary, social, cultural, and historical traditions and the continuing influence of those traditions on world cultures.

Students will develop skills in writing and comparative analysis.

Students will interpret and criticize texts and/or material culture within social, cultural, and historical contexts.

Students will produce synthesizing analyses of the relationship between literary or other cultural production and the identity formation of individuals and their communities.

All first-year student applicants must submit the following items:

File a CSULB application through Cal State Apply by the deadline

Have earned a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA or "B'" grade according to the CSULB GPA scale.

Fulfil CSULB's English Language Requirement

Have completed at least 1 year of high school mathematics. Applicants to STEM majors must have at least 3 years of high school mathematics.

Provide scores for at least 5 subjects completed. In addition, please provide scores for at least 2 "A/AS" subjects completed.
