Overview
Mathematics and statistics are responses to the fundamental human endeavor to understand the world. Furthermore, modern technological society relies on developments in these disciplines. Consequently, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at California State University Long Beach, as in most universities, plays a vital and indispensable role in the lives of the students and faculty.
Completion of this Mathematics Education option meets subject matter competence requirements for the Single Subject Teaching Credential Mathematics.
Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate mastery of basic mathematical ideas and techniques, ranging across the following fields – single and multivariate calculus, linear algebra, real analysis, probability/statistics, basic differential equations, and mathematical modeling.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the nature of proof.
- Demonstrate the ability to think analytically and critically and to formulate problems, solve them, and interpret their solutions, both collaboratively and individually.
- Demonstrate the ability to use technological tools (e.g., algebraic and visualization software, statistical packages, a high-level programming language).
- Demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge from one branch of mathematics to another and from mathematics to other disciplines.
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate mathematics both orally and in writing.
- Demonstrate mastery of foundational geometric concepts and aspects of the history of mathematics.
- Demonstrate the ability to bridge understandings of components of their major coursework to issues and content in secondary mathematics.
- Demonstrate the mathematical processes as articulated in the Standards for Mathematical Practices (CA Common Core State Standards).

General requirements
All first-year student applicants must submit the following items:
- File a CSULB application through Cal State Apply by the deadline
- Have earned a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA or "B'" grade according to the CSULB GPA scale.
- Fulfil CSULB's English Language Requirement
- Have completed at least 1 year of high school mathematics. Applicants to STEM majors must have at least 3 years of high school mathematics.
- Provide scores for at least 5 subjects completed. In addition, please provide scores for at least 2 "A/AS" subjects completed.
