Overview
The Department of Dance at California State University Long Beach offers a variety of movement practices that include technique, improvisation, choreography and Pilates. Dance majors study modern, ballet, jazz, and hip-hop; tap and dances of Africa and the African diaspora may be taken as electives.
Dance majors learn the elements of dance concert production, and music as it relates to dance, and draw connections between theory and practice by investigating dance through historical, pedagogical, scientific, and cultural lenses.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Dance Science Majors will perform a qualitative anatomical analysis of standing and dynamic alignment and key dance vocabulary, as well as provide exercises and cues for their improvement.
- Majors will execute and cue Pilates repertoire designed to enhance dance performance, movement coordination and physical conditioning.
- Majors will employ key anatomical and biomechanical principles for preventing dance injuries and promoting optimal technique when training as dancers or teaching dance technique.
- Majors will practice theoretical and practical scientific concepts of movement to help prepare them for pursuing further degrees or certifications in dance science or related fields.
- Majors will demonstrate competency in modern dance, ballet, jazz, and hip hop, enabling them to pursue careers in dance and dance-related fields, health and fitness professions, and graduate study in dance science or related fields.
- Majors will describe the historical, socio-cultural, and scientific dimensions of dance.
- Majors will analyze and describe the craft and aesthetic qualities of dance orally, practically, and in writing.
- Majors will practice basic scientific principles of wellness and conditioning for the promotion of lifelong health in dance.

General requirements
All first-year student applicants must submit the following items:
- File a CSULB application through Cal State Apply by the deadline
- Have earned a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA or "B'" grade according to the CSULB GPA scale.
- Fulfil CSULB's English Language Requirement
- Have completed at least 1 year of high school mathematics. Applicants to STEM majors must have at least 3 years of high school mathematics.
- Provide scores for at least 5 subjects completed. In addition, please provide scores for at least 2 "A/AS" subjects completed.
