Program Description

Courses in the History and Philosophy of Science program at California Institute of Technology - Caltech help students learn about the origins of theoretical and experimental practice; the social and institutional contexts of science; the origins and applications of quantitative methods; and specific developments since antiquity in the mathematical, physical, and life sciences, in geography and cartography, and in space technology.

Students learn to use social, political, biographical, and comparative analytic methods for the study of these fields. HPS courses in philosophy deal with issues in causation and explanation; the foundations of probability and statistical inference; and philosophical problems in biology, mathematics, medicine, neuroscience, and physics. They address ethical issues of significance, such as scientific fraud and misconduct, and human-machine interactions. Students can also minor in HPS.

General requirements

Regardless of your curriculum, we expect you to take the following classes in high school:

4 years of math, including 1 year of calculus (For students in the IB curriculum, this equates to taking 2 years of Higher Level Math)

1 year of chemistry

1 year of physics, preferably calculus-based, though not required

Four years of high school infers that you have had 12 years of education. As long as you meet our academic requirements within your country's curriculum, we will consider your application.
