Overview

The Classics degree at Oberlin College & Conservatory approaches the study of classics as an exploration of the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome from early pre‑history through Late Antiquity, situated within the broader and diverse Mediterranean world.

Through its courses, the university seeks to illuminate the complexities of ancient texts, artifacts, and art, using these materials as a lens through which students can reflect more deeply on themselves and on the modern institutions shaped by these ancient societies.

The learning goals of the classical civilization major are:

To develop knowledge of the main areas of ancient Greek and Roman culture: history, literature, religion, philosophy, humanistic values, language, and art;
To situate Greek and Roman culture within the wider Mediterranean world;
To develop critical independence of judgment of classical texts through the knowledge of a classical language (Greek, Latin);
To understand and critique the roots of Western culture and its survival in the contemporary world; and

To develop the skills of creative thought and critical analysis that make it possible to produce original scholarly work in the discipline of classical studies.

The Department of Classics at Oberlin is a community of world‑class scholars and students who share a passion for understanding the ancient world. It hosts evening lectures, translation marathons, winter term trips to the Parthenon, and summer archaeological fieldwork.

By engaging with the dynamic origins of Western societies and studying ancient sources—both texts and material objects—graduates go on to pursue careers in law, library science, museum work, education, and beyond.
