Overview
Mechanical engineers are innovators who design and optimize the machines and systems that keep the world moving. As a mechanical engineer, you’ll focus on physical systems such as engines, turbines, robotics, and advanced manufacturing technologies. At Western Carolina University, the BS in Mechanical Engineering gives you the technical expertise and hands-on experience to create solutions for transportation, energy, healthcare, and beyond.
Overview
Students who want to make the world a better place and help solve 21st-century challenges in areas such as energy, new product design, advanced manufacturing, and human health will find a home in WCU’s Mechanical Engineering program.
The curriculum provides a strong foundation in mathematics, science, and engineering principles, augmented by specialized mechanical engineering courses.
The program combines the strengths of a traditional engineering education—such as sustainability, design, and systems analysis—with extensive hands-on laboratory and real-world experience.
The focus is on project-based learning and close faculty-student interaction.
Graduates are prepared to succeed in the engineering workforce or pursue graduate degrees for deeper expertise.
Where You'll Go
Graduates of WCU’s Mechanical Engineering program are prepared for careers in industries such as automotive, aerospace and defense, energy, and healthcare.
They work as design engineers, manufacturing engineers, project engineers, quality engineers, and applications engineers—developing innovative solutions and advancing technology in both public and private sectors.
Some also choose to pursue advanced degrees at the master’s or Ph.D. level, opening doors to research, academia, and leadership roles.
