Overview

The Art (Art Therapy) programme from Arizona State University is the only Bachelor of Fine Arts programme with a concentration in art therapy in the Southwest region of the United States. This programme brings together mental health and artistic practice.

Students are educated in art therapy concepts, methodologies and fundamental principles, as well as in the history and traditions of art production. Courses include art history, art education, art therapy, psychology, studio art and professional development, including internships, pro-practice, seminar and exhibitions.

All registered art therapists are required to gain board certification, which includes a master's degree in art therapy. The courses offered meet the requirements for entry into credentialed American Art Therapy Association art therapy graduate degrees, including the required 18 hours of undergraduate courses in psychology and 18 hours in studio art.

Career opportunities

Graduates are well positioned to work in community art programmes, youth programmes and other entry-level social service program positions as well as entry-level art therapy positions, including that of assistant. Graduates have the guidance and tools to advance their academic careers and pursue professional opportunities, including exhibitions, residencies and grants.

This programme also prepares graduates for graduate study in art therapy --- required to become a registered art therapist --- and eventually gain board certification.

First-year students must:

Have a 3.00 grade point average (GPA) (a "B" or better where "A"=4.00) from a secondary school. Some ASU programs may have higher admission or English proficiency requirements and may consider a minimum ACT or SAT score.

Must have three years of high school coursework. (If you are currently in high school, ASU needs to see 9–11 grade coursework. If you have completed high school, ASU needs to see 10–12 grade coursework.)

Must have and present a completed high school diploma or certificate.
