Overview

During the Bachelor of Arts in German and Linguistics from New York University students are required to take an introductory course, i.e., either (1) Language, or (2) Language and Mind. Students should be mindful that some courses (e.g., Language, Sound & Language, and Grammatical Analysis) serve as prerequisites for other courses, and therefore should be taken as early as possible. Courses must be taken in the correct sequence.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of programme requirements, students are expected to have acquired:

Proficiency in German language skills, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing, at a level equivalent to at least B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

An understanding of German culture, literature, and history, including key movements and works in German literature and the cultural, social, and political factors that have shaped German history.

Critical thinking skills that enable students to analyze German-language texts and media, to identify and evaluate different perspectives, and to develop well-reasoned arguments and ideas in both oral and written communication.

An understanding of how to approach the study of human language scientifically.

The ability to analyze linguistic data in the subfields of phonetics, phonology, syntax, semantics, and sociolinguistics.

Standardized test scores (see NYU’s standardized testing requirements). Standardized testing is optional for the upcoming application term.

A Self Reported Academic Record (SRAR). All applicants will be invited to complete this after submitting their application.

English language testing if you have not completed at least 3 years of study where English is the sole language of instruction at the time of application submission and English is not your first language.

Records of all college work that you have received academic credit for and does not appear on your high school transcript.

The Common Application Mid Year Report with updated academic record if mid-year grades are available. This should show your first semester senior year grades.
