Overview

For the BA in Anthropology and Classical Civilization from New York University, one anthropology course, Culture, Power, Society (ANTH-UA 1), is required, along with four other anthropology electives chosen in consultation with the DUS of each department.

Twenty points are required in classics. Joint anthropology classics majors should also consult with Professor Radu Iovita in the Department of Anthropology and the DUS in the Department of Classics for aid in developing their programme of study.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of programme requirements, students are expected to have developed:

An understanding of the ways in which anthropologists and classicists approach the study of the ancient world.

Knowledge of the methods that anthropologists and classicists use to study antiquity, including the study of ancient languages and archaeological research.

The ability to conduct independent research using some combination of the study of ancient texts, archaeological excavation, laboratory methods, archival research, and technology.

Effective oral and written communication skills.

An appreciation of the diversity of ancient studies, including Greek and Roman antiquity, the ancient Near East and Asia, and ancient societies in Africa, Oceania, and the Americas.

Standardized test scores (see NYU’s standardized testing requirements). Standardized testing is optional for the upcoming application term.

A Self Reported Academic Record (SRAR). All applicants will be invited to complete this after submitting their application.

English language testing if you have not completed at least 3 years of study where English is the sole language of instruction at the time of application submission and English is not your first language.

Records of all college work that you have received academic credit for and does not appear on your high school transcript.

The Common Application Mid Year Report with updated academic record if mid-year grades are available. This should show your first semester senior year grades.
