Overview
Students of the Mathematics Education degree from Brigham Young University Idaho will learn the basics of mathematics while learning about the different aspects of teaching. They will gain the mathematical foundation they need in order to teach mathematics in the most effective way. Students will take core education classes while taking mathematical courses such as calculus, geometry and algebra.
Students will develop skills such as planning lessons and adapting different teaching methods and models to a variety of students and their different learning styles. They will learn how to work with, relate to, and teach their future students.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Communicate technical information and ideas effectively: As they work together in groups of peers on campus and as they work with age-appropriate students in field experiences, mathematics education students will demonstrate that they correctly use the language of mathematics as they describe principles and methods for problem solving, that they base their explanations on mathematical concepts and not mathematical shortcuts, and that they can provide different explanations for students with varied backgrounds.
- Solve real-world problems by applying diverse problem solving techniques: Specifically, they will learn and apply Polya’s problem solving principles, learn, practice, and teach a variety of problem solving skills (including guess and check, make a table or diagram, solve a simpler problem, use special cases, work backward, eliminate the possibilities, and the pigeon hole principle), solve problems using higher level mathematical tools such as analysis, algebra, geometry, and statistics, and be able to analyze a student’s problem solving skills and provide appropriate feedback.
