Overview
The Sociology- Anthropology offered by Saint Olaf College enables you to explore the meaning of social differences, offering you tools to grasp how gender, race, class, sexuality, and more shape behavior and relations of power in the U.S. and the world.
Majors take two courses in social theory, covering both anthropological and sociological approaches, as well as two hands-on research methods courses as well as a senior seminar on ethics.
This mix of analytical reasoning, research skills, and critical reflection prepares students for a host of possible professions. Our graduates go on to careers in social services, marketing, health care, education, public policy, and indeed have a wide range of options.
Distinct Disciplines
- Most people beginning their college careers are unfamiliar with the disciplines of sociology and anthropology.
- While everyone has heard these terms, few are able to define them or explain how the two disciplines differ from each other and from other social sciences.
- The following will help you better understand sociology and anthropology and how our major brings them together.
- Sociology and anthropology are distinct areas of study, with separate histories and different ways of looking at the world.
Career Opportunities
- Students are prepared for work in management of human resources, marketing, program evaluation, public policy, and a variety of other positions that require an understanding of human culture and behavior.
- Students greatly benefit from the study of ethnographic and quantitative research methods — a special strength of our joint major.
