Key Facts

Cultural anthropology is the study of contemporary human culture through an understanding of the beliefs, practices, and social organizations that make up communities in that culture. By conducting long-term fieldwork in particular communities, the cultural anthropologist seeks to understand and present the cultural perspective of the communities they study, humanely, from those communities’ points of view. Because many communities in which cultural anthropologists have traditionally conducted fieldwork have been poor, exploited, or faced discrimination from national cultures, there is a very strong tendency in anthropological scholarship toward social justice and in providing a critical voice against discriminatory and exploitative practices and policies. This social justice perspective goes hand in hand with the general task of relaying knowledge about the cultural diversity across the globe. At Wittenberg, cultural anthropology courses emphasize cross-cultural or global perspectives, ethnographic methods, and/or a strong social justice voice as it relates to historically denigrated groups.

General requirements

Certified Secondary and Post-Secondary Records. These records should be certified copies of original official records/transcripts of secondary and post-secondary school work.
Official TOEFL scores of 550 or higher, or TOEFL iBT scores of 79 or higher if your first language is any other than English: You can be exempted from the TOEFL if you score a 600 or higher on the verbal portion of the SAT. We also recognize IELTS scores. To be considered for admission, scores must exceed 6.5.
SAT: combined score of 1050 or higher
ACT: composite of 20 or higher
Two letters of recommendation.
Degree seeking International students must be a minimum age of 17 before they can apply for admission to Wittenberg University. No Student over the age of 22 can apply.
