Key features
State University of New York at Geneseo’s Sociomedical Sciences Major offers students the opportunity to acquire interdisciplinary knowledge on topics related to health, disease, illness, and medicine, as well as analytical and practical skills beneficial to post-graduate education and careers in medicine, public health, and other allied health fields.
Geneseo’s program is one of the only undergraduate programs of its kind in SUNY. The degree reflects national trends in interdisciplinary training in health and medicine using the lenses of the social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences. The capstone course teaches valuable research methods and offers students the opportunity to design and conduct a study on a topic of their choosing.
Program Highlights
- Earn major credit during short-term study abroad (3- to 4-week summer or winter intersession) or fulfill major requirements while abroad for an entire semester.
- Earn credit interning for an organization focused on health or medicine.
- Present capstone course research findings at Geneseo’s annual student research conference.

General requirements
- Complete the Common Application or SUNY Application.
- For a first-time university student, we require up-to-date official transcripts from all secondary schools (high schools) you have attended with English translations.
- The International Admission Committee requires that all students must demonstrate proficiency in English. Official results from the following English proficiency exams are accepted: TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, iTEP, MET, Duolingo English Test, Cambridge.
- At least one letter of recommendation, preferably from a teacher, is recommended.
- Personal Statement. Tell us a little about yourself! The personal statement should be about one page long, detailing your interest in SUNY Geneseo and your major of choice.
