Overview

Brigham Young University's modern computer laboratory for the Geography - Geospatial Intelligence program allows students to gain practical experience with geographical information systems (GIS), remote sensing, cartography, and other programs in urban and regional planning, travel, and population studies.

Students at Brigham Young University will:

be able to combine their acquired group research habits with their individual competencies in oral and written information exchange using geographic concepts and investigative techniques.
be able to act professionally using fundamental principles of intelligence (e.g. collection analysis) and describe how intelligence is used in government and private environments.
be able to analyze simple security and intelligence problems using a geographic perspective relating human actions to cultural political economic social and physical landscapes.
be able to analyze social science data (case histories) using structured analytical methods peculiar to intelligence analysis as practiced in the US.

Career

Graduates would expect to be employed in a wide range of both governmental and private positions. Government Agencies hiring in this field would include the NGA (National Geospatial Agency), CIA, DIA (Defense Intelligence Agency), NSA (National Security Agency), the Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, and Navy.

Jobs may also be found at more than 80 private firms that contract with those agencies to provide reconnaissance equipment, cameras, radars, radio and other receivers and platforms to convey them over areas of interest, as well as the software to operate, collect, exploit and disseminate the information.

Job titles would include Image Analyst, Image Processor, Open Source Intelligence Analyst, Current Intelligence, Collection Analyst, Cartographers, GIS, Political Analyst, Economic Analyst, Population Analyst, Regional Analyst, and Physical Geographer. Additional jobs could be found in the development arena working with the contractors creating the hardware and software to make the systems and processes of intelligence function.

All secondary education and college work done outside of the United States (not U.S. accredited) must be evaluated by an international credential evaluation agency at the applicant’s expense.
