Overview
We live in a world shaped by revolutionary new technologies, many of which require an understanding of the chemical and biological sciences. A number of science-related topics regularly make the news: advances in medicine and biotechnology, global climate change, pollution, environmental concerns, species diversity, genetics, forensics, and food science. Our faculty has the right mix of experience in education and in practical research, enabling our students to learn from experts in their field who also have a passion for teaching. You’ll spend time in lectures and labs, out in the natural world, and engaged in the exciting process of discovery.
Biochemistry at Rockford University is an interdisciplinary major intended for students interested in areas close to the interface between biology and chemistry such as bioinformatics, biotechnology, biophysics, genetics, neurobiology, immunology, toxicology, endocrinology and pharmacology. Our Biochemistry degree is rigorous with a solid foundation of science courses, a number of upper-level courses in chemistry, biology, and biochemistry, and a research-like investigative laboratory curriculum including a capstone experience. The Biochemistry major also covers the majority of prerequisites for entrance into graduate school or health-related professional programs including: medical school, dental school and veterinary school. Interested students also have the option of pursuing a Biochemistry degree certified by the American Chemical Society.
