Overview

University of Northern Iowa's Bachelor of Studio Art, Performance program is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in performance theory and practice. Through a combination of classroom instruction and practical training, students will develop their performance skills in areas such as theatre, dance, and music. The program covers a wide range of performance styles and techniques, including contemporary and traditional forms. The faculty are accomplished performers with extensive experience in their respective fields who are dedicated to helping students achieve their artistic goals. The program is well-resourced, with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment to facilitate learning. Graduates of the program will be well-prepared to pursue careers in a variety of performance-related fields.

Vertigo Performance Art Series

Each year, the Department of Art partners with the Waterloo Center for the Arts to present the Vertigo Performance Art Series. Through this series, students get to network with national and international artists as they prepare and present their performances. It’s rare for undergraduate students to have opportunities to closely observe the creative process of professional artists and it’s a great way to learn.

Since performance work is ephemeral, students also learn various methods of documentation including digital video. In advanced classes, students learn to edit using Adobe Premiere and strategies for distributing work online and through social media.
