Overview

Because Robotics is so interdisciplinary, most engineering disciplines offer routes into robotics. Many students in our graduate program come from mechanical, electrical, or computer engineering backgrounds, but also from aerospace engineering, naval engineering, information science, kinesiology, biomedicine, or other fields. There are also several undergraduate project teams where students can learn and apply skills while competing in international competitions.

Currently, we do not offer a SUGS program or minor but we will work to establish these programs in the near-term future after launching the major at University of Michigan.

In building the discipline of robotics, our principles organize around the definition of embodied intelligence provided by the National Science Foundation - essentially the idea that robots must sense, reason, act, and work with people to improve quality of life and productivity equitably across society.

Robots must take in information to perceive the world around them, plan out how to achieve a goal given their perception of the world, and then carry out that plan through controlling their motors and interacting with people and their physical environment. The study of robotics requires knowledge of how a robotic system sees its surroundings, how and what it can move around, and how doing so will affect its surroundings. While specific research questions in robotics can become much more technical, at the top-level, they fall within the broad categories of sensing, reasoning, or acting.

The requirements and learning objectives for our undergraduate program are organized around these principles of embodied intelligence. We are confident this learning framework will help students thrive as competent roboticists and enable them to continuously grow throughout their careers.
