Overview
Theology as the discipline of “faith seeking understanding,” an intellectually rigorous and integrative pursuit that allows us to know God and all things in light of God, central among which is the human person.
Key Features
Theology majors from University of Notre Dame are built on coursework in Christian scripture and tradition, through which students learn to engage with texts of scripture and gain an understanding of the central works of Christianity over time.
Students can pursue elective coursework in any areas of their choosing, from ancient Judaism to environmental ethics to Catholic dialogue with Islam.
The joint major in philosophy and theology is for students with a special interest in advanced work in both fields. In addition to core theology courses and electives, students in the joint major study ancient, medieval, and modern philosophy as well as a classical language, forming an interdisciplinary understanding of humanity.
Careers
Theology majors are part of an intellectual community that takes faith seriously — their time here is spent pondering the profound questions of human existence. This helps them develop essential skills that are valuable in any number of real-world settings, while also often leading them to feel called to pursue faith-inspired paths after graduation.
The recent graduates have gotten great jobs in technology, consulting, and government, while many also pursue graduate school in the humanities or sciences. A significant percentage also pursue full-time service work for a year or more, seeking to make a difference in the world by helping others.
