Overview

Completing the BFA and MA degrees in Art Education with Initial License from Boston University within five years can be accomplished by taking graduate courses during the last two years of the BFA degree. This program meets the standards set forth in the Massachusetts regulations for both initial and ensuing professional licensure.

Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate the integration of studio skills acquired in visual arts classes used in the teaching of a variety of media and in strategies for embedding concepts.
Demonstrate an understanding of the methods and processes necessary to nurture artistic behaviors in students.
Design a developmentally appropriate curriculum.
Develop and implement classroom practices that align with the Massachusetts Professional Standards for Teachers.
Demonstrate an awareness and ability to integrate contemporary art and issues into their community engagement or artistic or teaching practice, with a global and cross-cultural lens.

Demonstrate an awareness of the broad needs of learners and be able to design classroom spaces, activities, and assessments that take into consideration issues of disability, trauma, emotional and mental health, and English language proficiency.

Declaration of Interest

Students who would like to pursue the 4+1 should declare their interest in this program during the spring of sophomore year, concurrent with declaring their undergraduate major.

Admission into the +1 Year

During the fall of the senior year, students who had previously declared an interest in the 4+1 and who have continued to take the required courses will be invited to formally apply to the MA in Art Education with Initial License for their +1 year. Application requirements can be found on the CFA website. The application fee and portfolio requirement are waived for students applying to the +1 year.
