Overview
The Bioethics programme at Emory University provides a rigorous academic framework for students to explore the complex moral challenges arising in modern healthcare and biotechnology. This integrated 4+1 dual degree allows undergraduates to transition seamlessly into postgraduate research, fostering deep expertise in the ethical dimensions of science and medicine.
This unique pathway offers significant advantages by shortening the total time required to earn both an undergraduate and a master's degree. Students benefit from early access to mentorship by distinguished faculty members and can better align their foundational studies with advanced professional training. The curriculum is particularly suited for those aiming for careers in law, public policy, or clinical practice.
Why Bioethics at Emory University?
Students at this institution benefit from a highly integrated learning environment that bridges the gap between undergraduate and graduate education. The programme features a mandatory service-learning practicum, providing a faculty-mentored opportunity to implement ethics in real-world settings. This practical experience is conducted at various partner sites throughout Atlanta and beyond.
The teaching approach emphasises clear verbal communication and independent critical discourse, ensuring students are prepared for high-level professional environments. Furthermore, the university provides flexible pathways for concluding the degree, including a formal thesis, a comprehensive examination, or a capstone project. This adaptability allows students to tailor their final year to their specific career aspirations.

Programme Structure

- Students will apply to the 4+1 Bioethics program in their junior year and begin taking two MA in Bioethics courses in their senior year.
- By taking two courses in their senior year, they are able to complete the dual degree by the end of the Spring term of their fifth year (as opposed to the end of the Summer term for students pursuing the two degrees separately).
- Students will complete the standard 30 credit hours for the MA-Bioethics curriculum.
