Overview

As the population of West Virginia and the nation age and as the opioid crisis expands, the demand for basic and applied neuroscience researchers and clinicians continues to grow. The goal of Neuroscience program at West Virginia University is to attract new students to West Virginia University from diverse cultural backgrounds and train them as neuroscience professionals. Students graduating from the BS in Neuroscience program are uniquely prepared for admission into advanced degree programs in neuroscience, biomedical engineering, medicine, and biomedical sciences at WVU or other institutions. These graduates are also prepared to serve in academic and technical positions in private industry as well as the broader healthcare industry.

Program Learning Outcomes

This B.S. curriculum will provide a comprehensive introduction to the field of neuroscience and many of the professional skills needed for post-graduation career options.

Upon completion of the B.S. in Neuroscience program at WVU, the graduate will be able to:

Describe the structure and function of the nervous system at the molecular, cellular, and behavioral/organismal levels.

Apply fundamental principles underlying the organization and function of the nervous system across sub-systems and species.

Synthesize information from across the field of neuroscience to:

Read and comprehend basic neuroscience literature

Critically evaluate new neuroscience research and emerging techniques

Establish testable hypotheses

Design approaches to test hypotheses about nervous system function

Collect, analyze, and interpret basic neuroscience research data

Communicate research via a variety of venues including:

Written reports

Oral presentation of journal articles

Poster-based oral presentations of their research

Careers

Many students with a BS in Neuroscience are interested in pursuing a medical degree or an advanced research degree. We provide students with superior training, which makes them highly competitive for medical school or an advanced degree in neuroscience.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts massive growth across the fields of employment for which students with a BS in neuroscience or with a BS plus an advanced degree will be qualified. Specifically, it is predicted that over the next decade the field of neuroscience, will experience a 19% increase in academic jobs (i.e., graduate assistantships, postdoctoral fellowships and professorships).

Must have at least a 2.5 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale for general admission.

Must meet English Proficiency or request conditional admission and admission to the Intensive English Program (IEP).

Please be advised that some Engineering majors may reach capacity and therefore will be restricted from entry.

For direct admission to some colleges and majors, SAT or ACT scores are required and must be sent to WVU directly from the respective testing services. Please review the program requirements. For all other majors, international students are encouraged but not required to submit SAT or ACT scores, if available. SAT/ACT scores are useful for determining scholarship eligibility.

WVU welcomes applications from students with IGCSE and O-Level Certificates from Cambridge International for admissions consideration.
