Overview

You’ll get the chance to perform with our two UCM Jazz Large Ensembles and with our Jazz-Rock Combos while taking classes related to improvisation, arranging, and history. UCM alumni have continued their studies in graduate Jazz programs at institutions such as Rutgers University, University of Northern Colorado, and University of Missouri-Kansas City. They have also secured professional jobs as performers and educators in the field.

Each semester you will receive instruction from UCM’s outstanding faculty and world-renowned guest artists. Recent guest artists include Tamir Hendelman, Shawn Pelton, Rob Scheps, Jerry Dodgion, Jim O’Connor, Jason Jackson, Todd Strait, Kathy Kosins, and Roger Rosenberg.

Program Learning Outcomes

The graduate with a Bachelor of Music - Jazz Commercial degree at the University of Central Missouri will use the knowledge and skills obtained in the program to:

Interpret and analyze music through historical, cultural, and theoretical study, and communicate findings in discipline-specific formats.

Perform, improvise, and create in individual and collaborative settings with technique, musicality, and artistry.

Integrate current technology and software applications in the study and practice of music and the sonic arts.

Demonstrate functional piano performance skills.
