You will examine the origins and evolution, biological characteristics, material culture, social dimensions and dynamics of humankind. Learn the origins of societies and understand how humans have interacted with themselves and nature for centuries, shaping how we live today.

Delve deeply into the study of humans both past and present as an anthropology major. Anthropology, a field of inquiry considered the most humanistic of the social sciences and the most scientific of the humanities, is a deeply comparative and participatory discipline that prepares you for meaningful life and work in our diverse and interconnected world.

The Anthropology program curriculum from West Virginia University fosters an awareness of the structure and diversity of human societies, past and present, and offers a broad range of perspectives on the experiences and meanings of being human. You will be exposed to the methods of inquiry and to the special knowledge and insights of anthropology.

Students graduating with a BA in Anthropology will be able to:

Describe anthropology’s core theoretical perspectives, its distinctive history, and its unique breadth and range as a discipline.

Interpret past and present human life-ways holistically and comparatively.

Discuss the importance of knowledge and understanding of a culturally and biologically diverse world.

Differentiate between the multiple methods employed by anthropologists across its subfields.

Apply ethical principles to the conduct of anthropological research and the applications of its findings.

Critically analyze anthropological questions and issues by retrieving and synthesizing appropriate information and evidence and identifying implications for research and practice/policy.

Demonstrate effective, clear and persuasive communication skills according to disciplinary conventions.

Must have at least a 2.5 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale for general admission.

Must meet English Proficiency or request conditional admission and admission to the Intensive English Program (IEP).
Please be advised that some Engineering majors may reach capacity and therefore will be restricted from entry.
For direct admission to some colleges and majors, SAT or ACT scores are required and must be sent to WVU directly from the respective testing services. Please review the program requirements. For all other majors, international students are encouraged but not required to submit SAT or ACT scores, if available. SAT/ACT scores are useful for determining scholarship eligibility.
WVU welcomes applications from students with IGCSE and O-Level Certificates from Cambridge International for admissions consideration.
