The MA in Medieval History is structured to provide a robust foundation in the first two years, followed by specialised studies in the latter years. The course includes:

  • The Fall of Rome and the Origins of Europe (400-1000)
  • The Kingdom of the Scots, c.900-1707
• Second Year Modules:
  • Medieval Europe (11th - 15th c.)
  • History as a Discipline: Development and Key Concepts
  • Introduction to Middle Eastern History
  • Scotland, Britain and Empire (c. 1700 - 2000)
• Honours Modules (Third and Fourth Years):
  • Death and the Afterlife in Later Medieval Europe
  • Holy Lives in Late Antiquity
  • Queens and Queenship in Early Medieval Europe
  • Sex and Gender in Medieval Europe
  • The Mamluks and the Mamluk Sultanate

In the fourth year, students will also complete a dissertation of approximately 12,000 words, allowing for in-depth exploration of a chosen topic, further enhancing their research capabilities.
