Overview
The Service-Learning Honors major delivered by University of Nevada, Las Vegas is open to students who earn an Associate of Arts degree prior to enrolling at UNLV, to transfer students from other universities, as well as continuing UNLV students who have completed the bulk of their general education courses and who are not already participating in our University Honors or Research and Creative Honors programs.
Why consider Service-Learning Honors?
- Finding Personal Fulfillment
Engaging in service that supports your communities can be incredibly rewarding. In the Service-Learning Honors program, you will have opportunities to study community challenges, ask intriguing questions, and consider creative solutions. You will develop self-confidence as you practice creating and implementing plans of action while developing a sense of community and civic responsibility. Additionally, research has consistently shown that engaging in service positively impacts one’s mental health and fosters a stronger sense of well-being.
- Sharpening Skills for Graduate School and Professional Life
The SH Program emphasizes active, hands-on learning that sharpens critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills. Collaborating with partner organizations, you'll tackle real-world challenges, making a tangible impact in the community. Completing a Service-Learning project strengthens your CV/resume by showcasing your compassion, teamwork, and ability to excel independently and collaboratively—qualities highly valued by employers and graduate programs alike.
- Creating New Opportunities
The Service-Learning Honors program empowers you to be an agent of change in your community. As you work with peers, professors, and community leaders, you will build friendships, cultivate mentorships, and unlock new academic and professional opportunities. You’ll also learn to embrace new experiences and try new things, which are central to the Life Design “bias to action” mindset (Burnett & Evans, 2016). SH students may also present at academic conferences and compete for nationally competitive awards.
