Program Description

The Environmental Science and Engineering program at California Institute of Technology - Caltech can be pursued along two tracks: environmental physics and environmental chemistry. These tracks have separate course requirements and emphases, but at their hearts provide fundamental training in core scientific disciplines, with specialization in applications to the environmental and climate sciences.

The two tracks share a sophomore year that continues the Core Curriculum's training in mathematics and physics. Each track requires a laboratory component and training in data analysis and statistics. All ESE majors must take three broad-based classes providing introductions to atmospheric and oceanic physics as well as marine and terrestrial biogeochemistry.

General requirements

Regardless of your curriculum, we expect you to take the following classes in high school:

4 years of math, including 1 year of calculus (For students in the IB curriculum, this equates to taking 2 years of Higher Level Math)

1 year of chemistry

1 year of physics, preferably calculus-based, though not required

Four years of high school infers that you have had 12 years of education. As long as you meet our academic requirements within your country's curriculum, we will consider your application.

$75 application fee or fee waiver

School Report: This is a document that your high school college counselor will send to Caltech that provides context about your school

Teacher evaluations

Official transcripts from your secondary school (or the international curriculum equivalent)

If you have taken college classes while in high school, please provide the college transcript, as well.
