About

The Sociology program of Rutgers University offers students the opportunity to study a great number of topics pertaining to the organization of social life.

Overview

Majoring in Sociology can take you where you want to go!

At a large research university such as Rutgers, sociology students experience a liberal arts college atmosphere—in both lower-level lecture courses and small, seminar-style upper-level courses, they gain a sociological imagination from our award-winning research faculty. Students explore how larger social structures of power, economics, and culture shape individual opportunities, attitudes, and behavior, critical for understanding our increasingly diverse and complex society and its challenges from growing social and economic inequality to mass incarceration and discrimination.

Students in the Sociology program of Rutgers University prepare for career opportunities that require excellent writing, communication, and analytical skills that are enhanced by a sociological perspective. A sociology degree opens doors to many graduate programs and careers in social services, consumer research, education, publishing and journalism, and policy analysis. Students in our health and society minor study health-related questions through a social and cultural lens, gaining excellent preparation for medical school or careers in health services. The criminology minor provides theoretical and practical knowledge about crime and an important social perspective relevant to work in the criminal justice system or as preparation for law school.
