Overview

The fieds of the Independent Concentration programme at Brown University may include emerging fields in the academy, such as "Educational Neuroscience," or broader interdisciplinary areas, such as "Migration Studies." The proposal process consists of: (1) Meeting with the Curricular Resource Center's IC Peer Coordinators; (2) Completing a draft IC Application and soliciting feedback from the Peer Coordinators; (3) Identifying an approved Faculty Sponsor (an advisor) and obtaining a letter of support; and (4) Submitting the application and letter of support by one of the six deadlines during the academic year. (Optional: Students interested in pursuing honors should read the IC Honors Thesis Guidelines).

Good reasons to pursue an IC:

Your idea is interdisciplinary, rather than just a subset of an existing field.
Brown doesn’t currently offer what you want to do, but it has the capacity to fill the scope and depth of your interests through existing courses and faculty.
You want to spark a conversation between fields rather than just study the fields as they are (for example, majoring in philosophy and biology won’t give you the same experience as a bioethics concentration). Instead of doing two distinct fields you have interests in, the IC should combine both interests into one coherent field of study.

We strongly encourage applicants to submit a scanned image of the transcript at the time of application, which can speed processing; however, a final, official transcript will be required of all admitted students who matriculate. Applicants who have attended international institutions must submit transcripts or certified attestations of study, with certified English translations.

Three letters of recommendation by persons well qualified to speak from first-hand knowledge about the applicant's potential for graduate study. All letters should comment on an applicant’s ability to do research and perform in the program’s required coursework.
