Overview
The Speech and Hearing Science - English as a Second Language (ESOL) program of the University at Buffalo provides you with content expertise in Speech and Hearing while preparing you to teach English as a new language to speakers of other languages in American educational systems (preK-12): early childhood, childhood and secondary schools.
The Department of Communicative Disorders and Sciences offers students a pre-professional major that focuses on the development and breakdown of speech, language, and hearing processes. Courses focus on the nature and causes of communicative disorders, the techniques used to assess and diagnose speech, language, and hearing disorders, and the current methods and therapies used to remedy these problems.
The graduate portion of the program will continue to build understanding of teaching English to speakers of other languages and provide needed skills to become an effective teacher. The final year residency allows students to co-teach alongside an expert teacher to experience the inner workings of the classroom. At the end of the five-year program, successful students will receive recommendation for New York State Initial and Professional Teacher Certification.
