Overview

Students explore questions such as: How do we acquire knowledge and exhibit creativity? What constitutes intelligent behavior in human and non-human entities? The curriculum of the Social Sciences Interdisciplinary - Cognitive Science program of the University at Buffalo draws from courses in psychology, linguistics, philosophy, computer science, anthropology, and neuroscience while also allowing students flexibility in choosing a specific area of concentration.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this concentration students will be able to:

Understand several social scientific approaches to cognitive science.

Identify how cognition changes through the life cycle.

Identify and use computational models of human cognition and perception processes.

Apply symbolic and connectionist methods and the theory of computation.

Understand cognition apart from physiological implementation. Identify and use abstract principles of thought.

Identify language phenomena at the elementary physiological level through its abstract characterization.

Understand how the brain implements thought, sensation, perception and consciousness .

Identify symbolic information systems across disciplines and manipulate traditional information processing approaches.

Careers

The interdisciplinary structure of the major prepares students to go on to graduate study in psychology, computer science, cognitive science, philosophy, or linguistics. Additionally, the major's focus on analytical thinking, cognition, and human behavior provides an excellent skillset and knowledge base for industry careers such as information technology, education, human factors research, marketing, and government intelligence.
