Overview

Students learn about the relationship between markets and morality, the role institutions play in shaping our politics and economics, and how social norms can shape our behavior. Societies are rife with deep disagreements about what constitutes justice. Students who study in the Philosophy, Politics and Economics program of the University at Buffalo will gain a deeper understanding of the complexities of our political life, and tools for promoting positive social change. After receiving training in the core methods of PPE, students choose to focus on one of three thematic domains, each relating to a particular level of governance: Local, National and Global. This allows students to gain a detailed understanding of the challenges unique to their chosen level. Students will complete their degree with practical tools to solve important problems.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of all requirements, a Philosophy, Politics and Economics BA student will be able to:

Demonstrate the application of models to the explanation and prediction of behavior in the social sciences and as aids to decision making, as well as the evaluation of the limitations of models.

Use and evaluate normative reasoning in model-aided decision-making. Students will be able to identify and evaluate normative assumptions in models created by others, and capture normative considerations in their own models.

Incorporate empirical evidence, theoretical social science, and normative considerations into their written and oral arguments.

Synthesize information from multiple disciplines into their written work.

Explain how economic and political change is facilitated or constrained by institutions.

Apply these skills towards a particular level of political organization – local, national, or global.

Careers

Many PPE majors go on to post-baccalaureate study in law, business, philosophy, political science, economics, and public policy. Thanks to the rigorous, practical training that majors receive, PPE majors can find success in business, consulting, public service, and a variety of other analysis-driven fields.
