Overview

Students in the Fine Arts - Photography program of the University at Buffalo will be exploratory creators, motivated and open to multiple possibilities of expression. Informed by historical development, contemporary concerns and anticipating the future of photography, students engage in the analysis of form, intent and meaning. These skills can then be applied to both advanced academic research contexts and/or more everyday (on-demand) industry roles.

The BFA degree focuses on intensive work in photography, supported by a smaller, more defined program of general studies.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of all requirements, the student will have knowledge of:

A broad, applied knowledge of fundamental strategies, and methods of contemporary art-making and photography.

Both current and historical tools and techniques of photographic production.

A deeper creative intellect and a broader range of creative problem-solving skills.

Critical skills for presenting their own work, explaining concepts and critically engaging the work of others.

Developing a cohesive body of work.

Contextualization of their work within contemporary discourse.

Careers

UB Art alumni can qualify for a range of professions that involve creative problem solving, critical thinking and an understanding of cultural context, including art galleries, museums, alternative spaces and auction houses.

Our alumni include many artists who have national and international reputations from their acclaimed exhibitions, commissions, and awards. Alumni have also had great success in education, becoming professors or lecturers at leading colleges and universities or teachers at community colleges and secondary schools. In addition, alumni have entered a range of professions in places such as art galleries, museums, alternative art spaces, auction houses, design and advertising firms, and government agencies for culture as directors, designers, curators, preparators, installers and art handlers, as well as finding themselves in conservation, fabrication, fund raising, and community outreach programming.

Admission to UB’s freshman class is selective and is based in part on the quality of your secondary school academic record and the number of spaces available in the class

You should feel confident applying to UB if you have an above-average academic record and have taken challenging courses in high school to help prepare you to be successful at university

UB uses a 4.0 grading scale and we expect students applying here to have the equivalent of a 3.0 on that scale. That is the same as a grade of B or 83 on a 100-point scale
