Overview

Students qualify for the Bachelor of Science degree in BCB by successfully completing courses in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and computer science, followed by a research project guided by a UB faculty member. Students have the option to specialize in one of the three program sub-areas, Biological Sciences, Computer Science and Engineering, or Biomedical Informatics.

Program Learning Outcomes

Students of the Bioinformatics and Computational Biology - Biological Sciences program of the University at Buffalo will:

Develop computational skills relevant to solving problems in bioinformatics

Develop relevant skills in math, statistics and biology that enable success in the field of bioinformatics

Develop analytical skills that will allow them to identify important problems in bioinformatics and to identify solutions

Gain research skills that allow them to apply their academic training to real-world problems

Develop written and oral communication skills that are crucial to articulating research goals and reporting research results

Career Outlook

Holders of the Bachelor’s degree in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology will be well qualified to either enter the workforce or go on for additional graduate-level training. Research careers for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology majors can be found in fields as diverse as ecology, evolution, neuroscience, cell biology, genetics, molecular biology, and epidemiology. Research careers are prominent at colleges, universities, government agencies (e.g. EPA, CDC, and NIH), pharmaceutical companies, and the biotech industry. The diversity of courses also provides a solid foundation for teaching at the secondary, community college, or university levels, as well as for science-focused careers in law, journalism, public policy, and the non-profit sector.

Admission to UB’s freshman class is selective and is based in part on the quality of your secondary school academic record and the number of spaces available in the class

You should feel confident applying to UB if you have an above-average academic record and have taken challenging courses in high school to help prepare you to be successful at university

UB uses a 4.0 grading scale and we expect students applying here to have the equivalent of a 3.0 on that scale. That is the same as a grade of B or 83 on a 100-point scale
