With a wide range of literature, writing, communication, and education courses, the English Education program of the University of Minnesota equips students with deep content knowledge and teaching excellence. You’ll prepare to teach English in grades 5-12. Therefore, you will play a vital role in shaping the future, creating world citizens who are focused on the importance of diversity, critical thinking, and the art of effective communication.

At a Glance

Prepares you for the teacher’s license so that you can secure employment upon graduation.

Incorporates Literature, Writing, Communication, and Education courses.

Take writing-intensive courses that will enhance your applied English skills in writing, editing, and research; gain an understanding and appreciation of the English language.

Consists of communication courses to enhance your applied skills in speaking, writing, listening, and communication. Obtain skills unique to the humanities, as a large portion of the degree focuses on the field of literature.

Field-Practicum Experience: requires you to practice experiential learning in actual middle and high school classrooms in local schools. Upon graduation, students will have a solid classroom experience to serve as an independent teacher.

English Education graduates will be able to gain employment in Education, teaching English in grades 5-12.

English is the second most popular degree for secondary education teachers (Digest for Education Statistics 2011), and in Minnesota, English Literature is the 24th most popular area of teaching out of 466 categories (MN Department of Education, 2012-2013). “Minnesota currently employs 65,000 English-related professionals….The two largest English-related professions in Minnesota are Elementary School Teachers and Secondary School Teachers” (“Environmental Scan”, 2017, p. 3).
