The Major

Many of the classes in the Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences undergraduate program of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) involve studying in the field, at sites near and far. And, through MIT’s Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP), students in EAPS have ample opportunity to work alongside faculty conducting significant research. We also offer a distinctive Fifth-Year Master of Science Degree Program.

How do I become an EAPS major?

The requirements for the major are designed to give you the chance to explore the research area that excites you. After building a foundation with the subjects in the Core, you will select Lab/Field subjects and Concentration Area subjects that support your interests. Your advisor will help you build a coherent program. Whichever subjects you might choose, you will build quantitative and analytical skills that will be important for your career after earning your degree.

MIT First Years choose a department for their major at the end of the Spring term.
