Overview

Rather than viewing research and teaching as separate goals, the Psychology faculty members strongly support the view that research and teaching are complementary activities. Thus, the Psychology Department’s vision is to gain national and international recognition as a research-oriented teaching-intensive department.

Goals

The mission of the Department of Psychology at Texas State University is to provide an excellent education for students, taught by dynamic faculty who are also active in their fields. It seeks to foster the spirit of creative inquiry by improving students’ ability to read, write, and think critically (partly based on research methodology knowledge and skills) about enduring and emerging issues of psychology and human relationships.

To meet these general goals, the Department of Psychology commits to: (1) graduating well-qualified students having the professional expertise to improve the scientific knowledge base and clinical practices in psychology; (2) attracting and retaining diverse students with professional potential; (3) promoting strong expectations for intellectual relationships among faculty and students through improved teaching, scholarship, facilities, and extra-curricular activities; and (4) creating an atmosphere of cohesiveness and esprit de corps.

ACT and SAT test scores are not required for applicants ranked in the top 75% of their graduating class. Those applicants who do not meet assured admission, or do not submit test scores, will be reviewed holistically. All students ranked in the fourth quartile of their class must submit scores that meet assured admission standards for admission.
When reviewing your application, Texas State will consider your high school curriculum, admission essay(s), quality and competitive level of courses taken and grades earned, in addition to other factors presented in your application.
International first-time college applicants are required to graduate or have graduated from a foreign secondary school with an academic profile equivalent to that of a U.S. high school curriculum. They must meet freshman admission standards and meet the minimum English Language Proficiency Requirements.
