Overview
The Bioengineering programme at George Mason University provides students with a robust foundation in engineering principles and biological sciences to address global health issues. This undergraduate degree is designed to equip learners with the technical expertise required for innovation in the medical field. Through a blend of theoretical study and practical application, students prepare for diverse roles in the healthcare sector.
The curriculum is built upon four primary pillars: Biomaterials and Nanomedicine, Biomedical Imaging and Devices, Computational Biomedical Engineering, and Neurotechnology and Computational Neuroscience. These core areas ensure that graduates possess a well-rounded understanding of how technology intersects with human biology.
Why Bioengineering at George Mason University?
Students benefit from state-of-the-art facilities, including the Bioinstrumentation Instructional Laboratory and the Biomedical Engineering Design Laboratory. These spaces offer hands-on experience with 3D printers, electronics testing stations, and data acquisition systems. The university’s location provides unique access to clinical and industry partnerships, enhancing the educational journey through real-world exposure.
The department also offers distinctive opportunities such as a summer clinical immersion, where students spend six weeks in a hospital setting to identify real-world needs for their senior design projects. Additionally, global perspectives are encouraged through study abroad initiatives in Guatemala, Ecuador, and exchange programmes with partners like Universidad Carlos III de Madrid.
