Departmental Goals:

The English programme at Marist University offers concentrations in literature, writing, and theatre; the goals and principles underlying these concentrations are the same:

To increase the student’s appreciation and understanding of the literary, pragmatic, rhetorical, and dramatic uses of language.
To develop the student’s ability to write effectively in a variety of situations.
To help the student become more receptive to the many-sided pleasures of reading, writing, and oral presentation.
To enable the student to see how literary and nonliterary texts illuminate the complexity of human experience.
To heighten the student’s awareness of the moral and ethical implications of literary and nonliterary texts.
To foster the student’s intellectual, aesthetic, and professional creativity.

As an English student at Marist, you have many opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities related to your major and other interests.

The English Department is home to four campus-recognized student organizations:

Sigma Tau Delta National English Honor Society, Marist University Club of Theatre Arts (MCCTA), Alpha Psi Omega National Theatre Honor Society, and the Literary Arts Society. Each provides students from across campus with opportunities to explore our disciplines through performances, publications, workshops, and events.
English majors regularly participate in other clubs, play sports, hold internships, and host annual events such as Literary Desserts, The John P. Anderson Playwriting Festival, and the Poetry Slam.
