History majors aren't limited in their career opportunities. Many careers within almost all sectors are looking for talented individuals who have the critical thinking and comprehension skills that come from those studying history.

In fact, many well-known personalities started their careers after studying history in college – from politicians like John F. Kennedy, Joe Biden and Newt Gingrich, to journalists Wolf Blitzer and Chris Berman, to business people Carly Fiorina and Lee Iacocca, to entertainers Steve Carell, Jimmy Buffett and Conan O'Brien.

Key Features

The History (Thematic concentration in Economic and Business Cultures) degree at Duke University is based on the belief that knowledge about the past forever changes how we think about ourselves now.

The curriculum challenges students to think critically about the world around them and their place within it. It also offers insight into areas students may wish to pursue as careers, including law, medicine, education, public policy, business, and community action.

The Department of History maintains a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching, which is evidenced in the teaching awards our faculty has received.

Transcripts

Duke will consider official scores as well as scores that are self-reported on the application. Submitting essay scores from the ACT and/or SAT is optional.

If you are a non-native English speaker or if you are not currently studying in an English-medium curriculum, Duke recommends but do not require that you take an English proficiency test.

Duke requires three letters of recommendation for each applicant: one from your school counselor and two from teachers who have taught you in major academic courses (English, mathematics, social studies, sciences, foreign languages), preferably within the last two years of secondary school.

Both the Common Application and the Coalition Application include a one-page personal essay as well as short essay questions specific to Duke.
