Overview
Our Bachelor in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (concentration in Chinese) program at Duke University explores the chinese culture through the lens of language and literature; social movements, nationalism and diaspora; popular culture and the media; gender, visuality and feminism; film theory, cinema and aesthetics; and the implications of religion on identity and globalization.
In Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, you will develop deep linguistic and cultural understanding of the languages and cultures of Asia as well as transcultural competence and analytical abilities, crucial in today’s world.
Language Skills
Asian and Middle Eastern Studies offers language coursework in Chinese. Taking language classes, you will develop proficiency to interact and communicate with speakers of the languages of Asia and read primary sources in these languages. We encourage you to enhance and expand your language skills by studying abroad in programs designed, selected or approved by the department in such locations as Cairo, Beijing, Istanbul or Kunming.
Literature & Culture Courses
The Asian and Middle Eastern Studies offers a wide range of courses taught in English. In these classes you will engage with the cultures and politics of cities, nation states and regions of East Asia, the Middle East and the Indian Subcontinent. You will learn about the forces that shape them and acquire conceptual and analytical tools that will allow you to understand them in their local as well as global contexts.

General requirements
- Official transcripts for all academic work completed in high school are required and must be submitted by your school counselor or another school official
- All applicants must complete either the ACT or SAT
- If you are a non-native English speaker or if you are not currently studying in an English-medium curriculum, we recommend but do not require that you take an English proficiency test (DUOLINGO, IELTS, PTE, TOEFL)
- A one-page personal essay as well as short essay questions specific to Duke
- We require three letters of recommendation for each applicant: one from your school counselor and two from teachers who have taught you in major academic courses (English, mathematics, social studies, sciences, foreign languages)
- A nonrefundable $85 application fee
- To obtain an F-1 visa for study in the United States, a foreign citizen must furnish his or her home country’s U.S. consulate with proof of ability to meet educational expenses, along with the I-20 form.
