Overview
Opportunities for mathematics majors to excel at W&J begin in the classroom and extend into off-campus experiences at conferences and in internships that help students build a professional network while developing their skills.
The Department of Mathematics from Washington and Jefferson College has funded students’ travel to present their research at conferences across the country, including the national MathFest, hosted each year by the Mathematical Association of America. In recent years, W&J students and professors have presented research they conducted together on campus at this meeting. The department also has resources which enable students to complete summer research.
With this kind of support, math majors like Alexas Iams ’21 are able to land high-profile internships. Alexas interned with NASA’s Langley Research Center on a project related to the on-orbit operation of the Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment III (SAGE III) International Space Station mission.
Careers After W&J
W&J mathematics alumni can be found in fields including banking, finance, actuarial science, data analytics, computer science, biostatistics, engineering, and more. Our faculty prioritize writing, communication, and collaborative work within the major, knowing that these skills are key not only in mathematics, but in many other fields. They also encourage and accommodate students majoring in another subject to add math as a second, complementary major, broadening their skillset into one that will be unique and desirable in the work place.
With this foundation our students are prepared to step into big career roles, like Sam Shaub ’18, who works as a consultant in the field of business intelligence, helping companies to understand and use their data to make better decisions – a job often available only to professionals later in their careers.
