As you move closer to a career, we will advise you on the appropriate upper-level courses to take to best prepare you for a specific field. If you wish to teach mathematics, you will complete your major in conjunction with the requirements of the Education Department.

Learning outcomes

To major in mathematics at Carson-Newman University, you must complete a minimum of 39 credit hours in the department.

Programme Structure

  • Our required courses include Calculus I, II, III, and IV; an Introduction to Abstract Mathematics; Linear and Abstract Algebra; Statistics; and a junior/senior seminar. 
  • You must also take a course in C++ or FORTRAN or demonstrate a proficiency in one of these languages. 
  • Additionally, mathematics majors must complete all general education requirements as well as complete six hours in a single foreign language or obtain the equivalent AP or CLEP credit.
